4 Lake Exercise Tips, How to Use the Lake for Exercise (2024)
Your New Year’s resolution fell flat again, and here it is, April. There is still time to get in shape for lake season, but the clock is ticking. You love the lake, and you hate the gym. A better body is your goal, and we are going to discuss some ways to incorporate the lake into your workout.
My favorite option is to run near the lake. My home is on a peninsula 500 ft from the lake so all I have to do is step outside, strap on my shoes, put my black lab on a leash, and take off around my neighborhood. I have 1.5 mile loop that I do 5-7 times per week. This is a great way to get the blood flowing. The beautiful view that the lake provides is one way to use the lake for workout with ever getting wet.
The next idea will probably take some warmer weather, but we already have plenty of global Lake Fun readers who are using their lakes on a daily basis. One of the best exercises you can do is swimming. In an open water scenario, like a lake, I always suggest wearing a lightweight PFD while you swim. Just head down to the lake with a friend and swim back and forth for 30-45 minutes. The amount of calories you burn will be unbelievable. There is no need for a lap pool and chlorine tainted hair when you want to swim this summer, just head to the lake.
Another way to get plenty of full body exercise is to paddleboard. If you have always wanted to learn how we have you covered with that too. The top paddleboarding author and instructors in the world Tim Ganley and Vie Binga have teamed up with us for summer 2016 to make sure that everyone who wants to know how to paddleboard, learns how to paddleboard. If you already know how to paddleboard and just want to step up your on the lake exercise, then you might be ready for Tim and Vie’s awesome guide on SUP Yoga. Buyer beware! This book and the amazing pictures will have you trying things on your paddleboard that you never thought were possible. We highly suggest it!
The last option for exercise on the lake is paddling a canoe or kayak. This is a great core and upper body exercise. It will allow you to see some great areas of the lake while you quietly float on the flat water. This option is so easy it requires no gas, marine battery, or GPS. Just get out there and cut some water with your paddles. Then watch the fat drip off your body.
These are some simple ways you can incorporate your favorite lake into your workout. What other ways can you think of to exercise on your local lake?
