The Youghiogheny River, often shortened to the Yough (/ˈjɒk/ YOK), is a 134-mile-long tributary of the Monongahela River that flows through West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania . Its name is a Lenape word meaning “a stream flowing in a contrary direction” or “a stream flowing in a roundabout course,” referencing the river’s unique northward flow throughout its entire journey.
